You’ll probably have to follow the opt-out flow as outlined in the link you posted. Currently installed apps without a Google-registered signature I guess will be grandfathered in, with updates requiring using the opt-out flow. It will also be possible to get around the measures using adb on a computer, if you’re in a rush.

You can also already preemptively go through the opt out flow in developer options. It’s a little annoying but not particularly more than the toggle you already need to flip to enable third party app installers. Once enabled, whenever Google chooses to flip the switch it won’t impact you. I’d never consider using out of date software when it’s ultimately still possible to both install unverified third party software and have the latest software updates.
Far too many apps rely on Google play services for fully disabling it to be an acceptable solution in my opinion.
Where would you do this in the developer options? I checked but didn’t find anything related to this there.
There’s now an option in developer options called “Apps from unverified developers”. Selecting it gives you the option to start the 24hr timer.
I don’t know when it appeared there, but it’s on every pixel and Samsung phone I own despite the enforcement date still being months away for most markets.

I sure hope a one time unlock will be enough for f-droid to be able to install apps and keep them updated!
Afaik there is no specifics on the implementation, but to me the most logical way for Google to inplement it, would be to update the setting at the OS level for installing 3rd party applications.
Google can then require any phone manufacturer that wants access to the Google Play Store and Google Play Services (which is all of them) to also push that update.
If they implement it like that, there would be no way around it other than simply not updating your Android
i use a 7 year old phone and it doesnt receive any new update since 2020, is it a good thing?
If your phone receives no updates, my expectation is that it won’t be affected.
android updates and updates to the google play services are working independently. old devices receive updates for the latter.
