I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus a few years ago, but I was shocked that the SD card it came with was preloaded full of ROMs. I’m even more shocked that they’ve all gotten away with it for so long, this was a lawsuit waiting to happen. Should’ve been common sense to only ship a blank SD and let the user supply their own ROMs.

And most know to toss the usually fake SD card that comes with bad ROMs anyway. And if they don’t it’s the first advice they’re given when they start asking.

So there no value in shipping it.

I have a collection of those crappy cards now. I use them in mp3 players and stuff. Who cares if they die. Just mp3s. I’ll just grab another one.

Yeah this does seem like they’re asking for trouble, literally selling a card full of pirated games seems risky

The ESA has asked the USTR to classify ANBERNIC as a “superfake,” implying that it sells high-quality counterfeit products

This just sounds like an endorsement though!

I really enjoy building my own rom collection :D It’s been one of the best parts about this handheld stuff for me.

I often look for cool and/or weird games and add them to them to my collection. Really fun every time, it’s like hitting gold when I find something strange.

The most recent case of this were the The Simpsons video games for the Gameboy and Gameboy Color. They seem so scuffed that I’m very interested. Haven’t gotten myself to actually try them yet though.

Reminder that the ESA represents businesses that have a direct financial incentive to do stuff like this.

They do not represent consumers nor do they side with them, literally ever.

i do think Anbernic should find another way, like stop providing roms altogether, stop just in certain countries, or provide roms only through convoluted routes(chain of custody) online or on physical media.

but i can’t fault them for trying to make it easy for consumers to get roms.

noobs and Normies rarely have enough tech skills to dump/rip their own cartridges and discs, nor piracy knowledge to safely access rom sites.

so the customer base for emulator hardware is more or less physically (i.e. by inescapable barriers) constrained from the beginning. it’s fundamentally different than making an emulator software and releasing on github or play store. they have to pay weekly/monthly wages so they have to get customers by any means necessary reasonable. the line of reasonableness has to be adaptable.

I wonder if this will make it harder to buy Anbernic products in Canada. I imagine a lot of the ones that get sold here go through US distributors first.
