Just got the urge to play a bit of payday 2, what do I see? Diesel 3.0 open_beta. Yeah, maybe there’ll be a good game to play again this summer.

The greatest failure Starbreeze did with PD3 was using unreal engine. While I don’t think that diesel is a perfect engine, having a bespoke engine automatically makes you unique and distinct. Minecraft, Terraria, Valve’s catalog.

Unreal Engine is a real cancer on this industry. Unbelievably bullshit but insanely high adoption anyways.

As someone who played this game, did not buy any DLC, and eventually pirated all the DLC, I can tell you the game is not balanced if you

    A) don’t have a group of 3 friends to play with, B) don’t buy at least some of the DLC, and C) don’t get some of the good DLC weapon mods as random drops.

That’s right, you buy the DLC and then get a CHANCE to get the content you paid for by succeeding at a mission. You only get 1 drop per mission, and it could be armor, clothing, masks, mask paint, and weapon mods. Grinding out the few solo-able/stealth-able missions for more drops becomes an enormous chore.

I don’t miss this game. Interesting to see it getting resurrected, but they’d have to really fix the loot system.

It’s also incredibly scripted. If you down a guard while undetected, use fly cheats, and drop his body bag out of bounds, you will see a new guard spawn in the map and attempt to B-line it to the body bag’s position. Even if you and your team play perfectly, the game goes out of its way to force a fight. The harder missions are not stealth-able despite seeming that way at the outset.

Every mission that says it is stealthable is stealthable. This is just wrong. I’ve played this game for ~700 hours.

I mean the game was free for a while. I got it when it was free then I just bought a big DLC pack for like $1. I play DSOD with random people, and it’s completely fine for me. Also, I don’t think they would bother running it still if there would be no DLCs, or at least DLCs weren’t worth as much as now they’re, since nobody would be buying them. At the end of the day, the company is made for profiting.

Yeah, development of PD2 was handed over to Sidetrack Games which is a tiny studio made up of a few modders.

They’ve done great work on the game so far, including the upcoming engine improvements and fixing many very old bugs that Starbreeze never bothered with. They’re great!

It’s not a PvP game, so “getting outgunned” isn’t really a concern. I ceetainly had fun with my time with it, without ever getting any of the DLC (except for Big Bank, maybe? I can’t remember if that was a DLC or not). But had had a friend group to play with. YMMV.

Ive heard a lot of hype around this game, but when I look at the store page, it says there’s like $300 worth of DLC, and a bunch of it looks like better guns and stuff.

Is it possible to enjoy this title if you only buy the base game and no DLC? Or are you going to be stuck in an endless grind and always be outgunned by anyone willing to pay $5.99?

I bought my DLCs for like $1. And I got lots of them, they go on sale constantly. Also, I played without DLCs for a LONG time.
