I live in “modern society” and do own a smartphone, but I’m aware that it’s a convenience, not a necessity.

I have multiple young-ish (30s) friends that don’t own a phone (not just smartphone; any phone), and basically all people I know above 80 years don’t own one either.

You can absolutely live a perfectly fine and good life without a smartphone. You’re just drawing the line where it’s convenient for you.

How about only apply to non-FOSS software? Most hobby projects used not just by the author altend to be FOSS, and businesses can decide to go FOSS, making their software independently auditable by anyone, or go through certification.

I guess there’s a danger of a campaign to re-brand FOSS as “uncertified” then…

I heard about star citizen when I was a teen, and it looked soooo cool. Unfortunately my PC was not strong enough. So I saved up for months to buy a PC specifically to play Star Citizen. Finally, I had all the upgrades I needed for the PC. Started excitedly pouring over Roberts Space Industries to pick my ship. Noticed the pricing model was… Off. In fact, this felt like a scam. Hold on, there’s no real game I could actually play? Decided to hold off until something released I could play, ideally with friends, and ideally via a less obfuscated pricing model.

Anyways, I’ve checked in with SC about once a year since. I’m about to begin the process to finance a house with my girlfriend of 9 years. Exciting times ahead.

I’m pretty sire SC won’t have released anything close to what was promised in 2012 by the time I retire, MUCH less anything promised since.

Same here. I also can count on one hand the occasions where a site was broken in FF but worked in Chromium. And for a majority of those, that was intentional (aka no actual issue, switchtig the user-agent “fixed” the site). So I have little understanding when people say they can’t use Firefox because pages break.

Is there actual REQUIRED upkeep though or could you say fuck it, and go ashore with a tent, row boat and the freshwater and food required for a week?

OK I’m curious. Would I be allowed:

• my blood glucose monitor? (It’s dead weight without a device reading it, but it does have a battery and it’s glued to/pricked into my arm)
• a stand-alone device reading values from it? (Think esp32 with a shitty 1.4" display)
• since I don’t actually own that, my phone for the sole purpose of reading my blood glucose?

Not really… At least not generally. The privacy increase from switching from Android to proper Linux is, to me at least, more important than loosing a locked bootloader.

That’s just my threat model. I know that Google & Co are extracting as much info about me as humanly possible, and I have no reason to believe that I am being targeted by someone with the capability to exploit the unlocked bootloader.

Same for my PC btw - secure boot is disabled because it’s not worth the hassle. Again. In my threat model.

(But I would wager that this goes for a lot of users.)
