They, as far as I’m aware, are not reselling like private equity would. They actually take over operations and get ROI through profits.

Thanks. Yeah, increasing revenue generation by increasing monetization is definitely part of their MO.
Can you explain more what and how they ruined something for you? So far I haven’t heard of any real negative change to the applications themselves.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why did Thanos, with the power of all the infinity stones, never think to try doubling the amount of resources in the world?
11·15 days agoI think you are thinking to hard about stories that aren’t meant to be thought about a lot. Whether you half the population or double the resources it is just a temporary “fix” anyways. It’s just a plot device for creating conflict and killing off fan favorites without actually killing off fan favorites in the end.
Maybe its also a ship of theseus type situation. If you have to copy /etc/ from somewhere else, is it still the same installation?

A good friend has one, also only for one ear. People don’t really notice, I’d say. I don’t think it really restored a lot of hearing but he still wears it usually as it is still better than nothing. He got it pretty quickly after his hearing loss, so no idea how that would be after 20 years. He got them for free through standard health care as far as I know. I don’t think he’d be willing to pay a lot for it if he had to. But I never asked that directly. Not aure if that helps. If you want I can try to ask him some specific questions if I remember to do so.

I know this is the wrong place to say this, but I really like the Windows Explorer. Dolphin is a good replacement, but it would be one of the few things I’d like to keep on Linux.
Support for overthrowing the government you say. Hmmmm let me think 🤔🤔 Who. Who could that be?
It definitely is/was. Most user facing software these days is a web app, or native application using JS anyways. The event loop and async programming is also ubiquitous nowadays in most languages, especially server side.

71·2 months agoCheck out Hitler’s paintings. He didn’t get into art school, sure, but they aren’t awful. It is certainly beyond anything the average person could just draw without practice. This is just garbage.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Japan has opened its first osmotic power plant – so what is it and how does it work?English
3·2 months agoHm from reading more on it, I think it has more to do with droughts in the area. That is why they build the desalination plant in the first place. I assume using the residual energy of the saline gradient (+ the boost from the brine) to generate new freshwater is better than further draining the naturally occuring freshwater. But still just a guess.

4·2 months agoDefinitely not shitting on the tech, it’s a really cool concept and definitely useful. I just wish news outlets would have asked how the cycle is beneficial. I don’t doubt that it is, but I don’t get it.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Japan has opened its first osmotic power plant – so what is it and how does it work?English
51·2 months agoI mean the part in the picture is clear to me. But if we assume freshwater is freely available, why would they want to power a desalination plant with the generated power? Basically you can trade freshwater (or salinity gradient generally) for power or power for freshwater. But in a simple loop you’d only lose both over time due to inefficiency.

Had the opposite situation with a colleague. Told us his car was a mess, expected this. But he had the cleanest, most pristine, old Mercedes I have ever seen.
