A lot of unpronounced letters are actually pronounced conditionally, for example in “Je suis un homme” the last s of suis is pronounced because it is followed by a vowel.

johny@feddit.orgto Memes@lemmy.ml•To be America's enemy is dangerous, but to be its ally is fatalEnglish525·5 months agoUkrainians were/are still fighting to defend themselves from an illegal invasion. But America sees and has always seen Ukraine as a proxy to weaken a geo-strategic rival. NATO was not realistically on the table as long as the conflict in the Donbas was ongoing (it would have immediately triggered art.5) to keep promising NATO instead of working on a more realistic path to peace has probably caused the death of 100000s of Ukrainians. And just as with many other imperial proxies in history, the proxy is left to deal with the fallout while the empire retreats to the metropol and prepares for the next conflict.

Not to mention all the excessive violence against the anti genocide protests.

johny@feddit.orgto Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney to vote for Democrat Harris, Liz Cheney saysEnglish42·10 months agoI’m voting for the same party as a world-historic war criminal so like that’s saying something.
At first I was at least impressed that it came up with such a hilarious idea, but then it of course turns out (just as with the pizza glue) it just stole it from somewhere else.
Yes, and don’t forget to donate to be extra sure. Donate that little money you safe from your three sharing economy jobs (after you payed your rent to Blackstone) to the Democrats, so they can pay a consultant ghoul a six figure salary to think of a new way to market genocide denial.
And the way to change it is to Vote Vote Vote! Vote for the Democrats! This time they are really gonna do it.
johny@feddit.orgto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about William Phelps Eno. He invented traffic regulations, the stop sign, the crosswalk, the roundabout, the one-way street and pedestrian safety islands. He never learned how to drive.English136·11 months agoYou could word it that way, or you could say: man who was driven everywhere by a chauffeur formalized the taking over of shared pedestrian spaces to car only spaces.
Also I have yet to learn of a member of the skull and bones society that was a good person.

And using a military to enforce policy does not equal conquering the world, it’s at the end of the escalation ladder, diplomatic pressure then sanctions, embargoes, support regime change, militarily blockades, limiting military operations, and finally full on invasion. These are all things the US is already doing but then for nefarious reasons.
johny@feddit.orgto World News@lemmy.world•Wealth tax on super-rich could raise £1.5tn globally, campaigners sayEnglish214·11 months agoHere is an idea, how about the US uses its military to enforce a minimum wealth tax worldwide to end tax competition, instead of to enable its proxies to commit war crimes.
Respect for turning an awful boomer meme into a reasonable programming meme with just two words.
johny@feddit.orgto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that on hearing about Kristallnacht, Kaiser Willhelm II said from his exile "For the first time, I am ashamed to be a German".English301·11 months agoHe is like a never-Trump republican, his problem isn’t with the policy (or the cruelty there of), but rather with the lack of decorum and breaking of norms.
A party is indeed the time and place where no jokes are made ever, no alcohol is involved, no cheesy flirting techniques occur, and everything is meant a 100% seriously always.
Interesting how France suddenly switched to a much more normal and acceptable stance on Palestine (including the statements in Egypt against a proposed ethnic cleansing), wonder what the catalyst was.
Also curious if Germany manages to keep their „saying Palestinians are humans equals antisemitism“ thing going, with even France moving closer to Spain, Ireland and Swedens standpoint. But I have little hope with Merz.
