Sounds like he is giving up because of his illness/problems. I know I can be a grumpy asshole who doesn’t care about things sometimes, but I am like this when I feel really extremely bad, because of a mental thing I have. In that moment, it just looks like I will never be ok, and that there is no point in even trying to be positive. When a couple of days pass, and I feel normal again, I know I was wrong with being like that, and I feel shame for it too. But in those moments, it just feels like that. I’m not trying to say that it is ok for him to act like that, it’s not. It’s not fair for you and your mother. But maybe he is always like I am in my bad days, feeling like there is no point in anything. I see only two solutions to this: he either needs (more) mental help, or you need to distance yourself a bit more from him. I mean, not like for ever, but moving out on your own is a good start. You need to think of your own wellbeing too.

I voted for a way different party in 2006 than I do now. Opinions change.
