this guy probably doesn’t know what he’s talking about but you can, in fact, travel without money. just not very far, very fast, or to a guaranteed location. i hitchhiked all around europe during my studies on semester breaks when i had lot of time and no money… i slept under bridges in a cheap sleeping bag or under a tarp on an alpine meadows and ate the cheapest grocery store items that didn’t need cooking. i typically spent less while traveling than i would have spent if i stayed home (especially if i didn’t need to pay rent during the summer).

  • “But if you don’t wash it, it gets dickcheese!”

did you know that when you don’t wash your hands you get lot of dirt stuck behind your fingernails? i got an idea! maybe we should take a pair of pliers and take those off as well. does that sound reasonable? no? that’s exactly how this “argument” makes me feel. when you don’t wash it then it gets dirty so we’d better cut it off is some really dumb stuff…

  • customer protection is taken seriously in germany (or any country whrere laws protect customers from companies rather than the other way around for that matter). you can’t for example just send an email to your customers saying “we’ve made some changes to our terms and conditions” without making it possible for the customers to say “ok, I’m out”. if there is no such option the customers may rightfully argue that this is simply not the product they purchased and the conpany is breaking their end of the deal.

  • i got first permabanned by a mod from r/news for commenting “when a terrorist hides in a school full of children it is not ok to blow up the school with the children still in it” under an article about IDF doing just that while hunting for some hamas fighters (no warning, no previous infractions, straight permaban, reason: “you broke the community rules” - no further explanation). it hurt a bit cause i did not participate in any political discussions normally. but shortly after that there was a picture of WW2 nazi flag on someone’s front yard in ohio and people started suggesting that someone should bring a veteran to this person to explain them the error of their ways. i didn’t resist and responded that this person knows exactly what they are doing and they do it cause there are no consequences to it. i also wrote that somebody should “tar and feather them and chase them around” - after which my account got restricted cause “we are trying to create a community where everyone can feel safe and therefore we cannot tolerate calls for violence against others”.

  • i mean each of the individual programs that can load your keepass keyring is a password manager.

the keyring itself isn’t a password manager and the main reason why i use it is because each of the individual programs that i actually use to open it (keepassxc on windows, keepassdroid on my phone, keeweb hosted on my vps on other devices…) can use the same file with the same specification that is shared everywhere.

i’m not bound to any particular program with a particular set of features. just use anything that can open that file format from a place where i choose to host it.

  • keepass

it’s technically no password manager but an encrypted file format.

there are dozens of apps that will work on any platform, including soft keyboard with “password” button for smartphone that will just work everywhere and browser extensions, static website, apps that allow you to use your yubikey to unlock and anything else. you can host your vault anywhere including a google drive or your own webdav or ftp server and keep local copies on your devices synchronized…

  • opens a post with question in the title that is lamenting that news don’t give any real answers and focus just on “trump bad” story.

all top comments are just “trump bad” and “all bad government” and has to scroll deep down to find an actual answer to the question posted.

leaves understanding much better why news don’t focus on context and give just emotional side stories.

  • yeah, according to our mayan guide when i was there the human sacrifices never happened… but they were extremely inconsistent with their stories and also believed that the number of days in the solar year is connected with human body through the number of joints so i wouldn’t take their word for it.

when i was listening to what guides in other groups were telling about the same spots and traditions i noticed that each and every one of them had their own fantastic and completely different story and many of the things they were saying were clearly wrong (e.g. that the descent of kukulcan shadow play only happens on two particular days of the year).

after living in the US for some time i think i’m starting to get it…

one thing about the life in the US that the hollywood movies don’t show you very well is that the country is extremely tribal. the stories of diversity or of outsiders building their american dream are almost pure fantasy - you don’t make it in america because of the environment but in spite of it.

the way things work here is that you have to be a part of a group and you habe to stick with that group no matter what. because otherwise you are done. that’s why it is so hard for either democrats or republicans to admit when their politicians do even the most insane shit. that’s why people would rarher risk their kids lives rather than go against their peer group and vaccinate them. and that’s also why it is so important that the couple is “white” and not black, latino or (god forbid) mixed…

racism, xenofobia, nationalism and mysoginy are just side effects of a society that is split into constantly competing groups that reserve all the benefits for their own members… constant positive and negative discrimination that forces everyone to fall in or be left behind and that is stoked by any entity interested in exploiting those fragmented groups more easily.

  • thinking google is about offering you a quality search at this point is like thinking facebook is about improving your social experience. they both started like that and that’s how they hooked people up. but they have their own interests now. those interests revolve around affecting how people act and think. one central thing they need to do to fulfil those interests is controlling what people see and know… and that’s very hard to do when this pesky external content generated by other that is hard to control gets into way…

  • thing is lot of that is on purpose. mastodon and fediverse are more of an attempt to come back to the state where there is no algorithm picking for you… but too many people nowdays are simply too lazy to search and actively choose what they want to see.

what we really need is to separate content (keep that in fediverse) and content access and presentation (the interface people use to access the content). if you want a bot feeding you content whole day and for your internet to become a tv you nobody can stop you. but if you want to think amd search nobody should stop you either
