If we let BYD into the U.S. market, it could end up destroying american manufacturersEnglish12·3 days agoAs an European living in Asia and can’t help but cringe at American cars. They’re so far behind. And it’s the car country. Japan has better cars and better rail. Embarassing.

I guess we’ll see as the story unrolls and early access comes eventually but I’ve met many successful people who stopped caring after they made it big (which is fine but then just quit) so I really wouldn’t be surprised if the publisher is right here.

Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•The same checks and balances meant to preserve democracy can sometimes become the same roadblocks preventing progress; How difficult should it be to enact policies?English4·3 days agoIt’s the toughest problem for this very reason but thats why freedom of competition is critical here. We can allow systems to self correct through incentives and protections and thats exactly what most western democracies are doing!
Diversity has been hijacked as a ideological word but its literally the best and most sustainable long term strategy even in rigid markets like investment (I.e. hedging, index funds etc). So diversifying power, despite blocking, is really powerful despite what current autocrat wannabes want us to believe.
Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•The same checks and balances meant to preserve democracy can sometimes become the same roadblocks preventing progress; How difficult should it be to enact policies?English3·3 days agoWill it though? Looking at China, Russia or Iran I’m not so certain. In fact it seems to be regressing without anyone actively working for progress.
Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are the privacy risks of exposing IP adresses?English6·3 days agoTheres definitely some risk especially in semi-anonymous forums like Lemmy. For example Lemmy.world is blocking VPNs so they know everyone’s IP addresses and given post history etc its very easy to actually identify who’s who. Especially now with AI forensics.
That being said, as a security expert, I think it’s not always productive for casual people to be obsessed with this and you if you can you should use a VPN or a mobile network which due to how cell towers work is much more anonymous than anything else in practice (datacenter IPs work too as well as TOR but those are blocked in practice)

Edit: seems anything above 30 microns is still legal which basically means only cling wrap and similar. Shopping bags on avg are 50 microns or so.

Emerging scientific evidence indicates that frequent digital technology use has a significant impact—both negative and positive—on brain function and behavior. Potential harmful effects of extensive screen time and technology use include heightened attention-deficit symptoms, impaired emotional and social intelligence, technology addiction, social isolation, impaired brain development, and disrupted sleep. However, various apps, videogames, and other online tools may benefit brain health. Functional imaging scans show that internet-naive older adults who learn to search online show significant increases in brain neural activity during simulated internet searches. Certain computer programs and videogames may improve memory, multitasking skills, fluid intelligence, and other cognitive abilities. Some apps and digital tools offer mental health interventions providing self-management, monitoring, skills training, and other interventions that may improve mood and behavior. Additional research on the positive and negative brain health effects of technology is needed to elucidate mecha
