I mean machine learning has been and is currently being used in science research.

It has its value there.

Don’t need big data centers for it. It can be done locally on computers with decent hardware.

Ai (and the data centers they require) that are being used to make knock off art and slop , and mass survey and manipulate the public is definitely not needed.

A lot of pro AI arguments are that “it could cure cancer”. But not really. And although machine learning and statistic calculations are used in scientific research, including cancer research, these things are done locally. Not through data centers. Not through big companies.

A lot of researchers use a program called “R”. It’s a statistical software that can be programmed to do anything really. Including machine learning. And it’s open source.

So we already have the “AI” tools for research. OpenAi, palantir, or any of those other companies do not offer better options to R. They like to pretend they could magically solve so many problems. If they wanted. If they only had more money. More data centers.

But the truth is they couldn’t. If ai could solve these things at the snap of the fingers, it would have already happened because scientists have been using sophisticated statistics in research for literally half a century at this point.

And have had the hardware to run highly sophisticated stats for at least 20 years.

Every time I see a video of a jacked woman showing off, and like most of the dudes standing around are frowning… there is always at least one dude. Sometimes two. Who are literally falling so hard with a look of absolute everything across their faces.

Yeah maybe. Assuming that’s the default. Because a lot of people are incapable of changing settings.

A platform that lets you only see people you anpprove and force opt-in to all others is probably a better plan.

For me personally, this is the main appeal of Lemmy. I decide what I want to see.

On YouTube and Instagram, for instance, you do have channels you subscribe to, but the sites/apps show you a lot of other related content.

On YouTube I probably follow maybe 60 channels so that’s probably not enough content to show me everyday.
YouTube also has a tab where you can just see your subscriptions. So that’s kind of convenient.

That’s probably the only nice thing I can say about YouTube.

But on Instagram I follow a few hundred (400ish) accounts. . Mostly artist. Probably 50 are friends I know irl.

Yet most of what comes up in my feed is not these. I have to manually go look at my friends’s posts or I never see them. Same with favorite artist.

So “following” seems to mean jack shit on Instagram.

I have a feeling that these companies will intentionally try to push low quality content to users who have turned it off, to motivate them to turn it back on.

Cause that’s just the way these fuckers are.

Yeah I’m pretty sure they intentionally push hate on immigrants to further exploit immigrants.

No one will hire you because you are a foreigner? Not to worry friends. This meat packing plant will pay you $4 an hour for 12 hr shifts.

Oh the meat packing plant gets caught hiring illegals.

That’s deportation for the workers. Slap on the wrist for the company that just made millions from the cheap labor.

They don’t want the workers to have legal status. Or rights. They want them scared and desperate.

That way they can pay them nothing. Put them in danger. Treat them like shit. And no one will call OSHA on them. No one will file a lawsuit.

I think if you saw what I saw you would be sure it’s bots. They repeat the exact same comment. They all post at the same time in batches.

For instance. They post comments usually right after the post is made and the next hour or so. Then never again.

Unlike other people who also show higher comments within the first few hours of a post going up but then still trickle in for a few days.

There are unusual patterns that stand out like that.

Strong evidence.

Humans are safest, healthiest, and happiest when we live in harmony and help each other.

We are highly social. We thrive when we work with each other.

They shouldn’t have been in the pen anyway. Trespassing without a warrant.

You don’t know what’s in there.

Why not let more immigrants in then?

Oh that’s right. Racism.

Refugees are our fault. Our own countries have destabilized theirs.

Pumped in weapons. Incited political violence for their own gains.

And then get all mad when the civilians want to leave to be somewhere safer.

Maybe if our countries stopped all the b.s of meddling in other countries affairs we wouldn’t have to take in a bunch of people trying to find a better life.

No one leaves their life and home for small reasons. These people fear for their lives.

I think you are using the word exploited wrong.

Exploitation means using desperation in people to force them into agreeing to do low paying work or other desperate acts.

The U.S, the EU, and Canada are largely responsible for destabilizing many other countries and inciting civil wars and genocides.

When civilian people from those countries, people who have no responsibility for the state of their home countries, attempt to leave to find a better life. You say they are exploiting the countries they move to.

It’s those same countries who made the immigrants home country inhospitable.

The amount of money spent on welfare is pennies compared to money spent on weapons and gifts of money to Israel. And all the tax cuts and tax loop holes they keep giving to billionaires who hoard wealth.

Investing in people helps them get out of poverty and give back.

Some times those investments take a generation to show the benefits. But it’s there.

That said, it’s important that welfare money is spent in ways to help people. Job training. Housing. Food. Education. And it’s balanced so that it’s not a better living to stay on it.

Like in the U.S. If you are on disability welfare. Let’s say you get $1000 a month. This is not a living wage. So you get a part time job. You can’t work full time because of your disability but maybe you could do 20 hrs a week. But if you do, you lose your disability welfare.

You won’t make more working 20 hrs a week than the welfare check. And you would also lose health insurance.

So this discourages people from working who could work part time.

This is a flaw with the system. Not the people who are forced to play by the rules and choose the best option.

Likewise. You can’t hold it against people fleeing from an inhospitable country , that your country had a hand in making inhospitable, to go somewhere they have the best chance of making it in.
