Things like this are often a protest by the builders against the architect. They spot a problem with the design, try and tell them and get shouted at. They then build it to the design, knowing it’s stupid, so the architect has to swallow the cost of fixing it.

News@lemmy.world•America reverts to calling mpox ‘monkeypox’ in anti-woke driveEnglish
7·4 months agoIt was first found in monkeys, but actually originated in rodents. It should technically be rodentpox.
Also, racists and homophobes used it to create stigma against gay men. In was/is particularly prevalent in that group. There were rumours that you caught it from sex with monkeys.
Basically it was renamed to pull the teeth of a nasty and insulting use, and to break a misunderstanding on its source.

4·4 months agoMight I introduce you to the wonder of reusable cable ties?
They have a release tab. You can undo them, adjust the cables, then retighten them.
Velcro is great, till it starts losing it’s grip.

Melatonin is broken down in the eye by blueish light. When this stops, the melatonin levels begin to climb, leading to tiredness.
This is also why phones etc keep you awake.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What the fuck is existence? What even is the truth? How does one know their parents are even real, and not just another actor in an IRL "Truman Show". Isn't history just another story?English
3·4 months agoI think, therefore I am. Everything else is open to flux.
If it helps, I’ve consciously made the choice to see the world as it appears to be. To interact with others, as if they truly exist. I’ve also made the choice to anchor my own morals in my own mental framework. I’m kind to others because I feel good seeing others happy. I try and make the world better, in small ways, because I want other to do the same, and don’t want to feel hypocritical.
It still unnerves me sometimes. I could turn off a lot of those feelings. I could easily make myself see others as lower, or lesser. Less worthy of happiness than me.
If the whole world is a simulation, then I deal with it as it comes. The same applies to religion.
FYI, there’s some (very weak) evidence that 3D space might actually be holographic projection from a 2D surface. If we are in a simulation, we are likely all in it together. At least we get to pick at the seams. It might even be stressing out a few higher dimensional post-grad students!

World News@lemmy.world•Exclusive: China buys Argentine soybeans after tax drop, leaving US farmers sidelinedEnglish
47·4 months agoIronically, this is (partially) why government social support services originally started in England. Back in the Victorian period, the rich realised it was cheaper to pay a bit more tax to keep the poor fed, than pay for security to stop them being robbed. It was also cheaper than locking them all up.

science@lemmy.world•NASA rover finds potential sign of ancient life in Martian rocksEnglish
1·5 months agoI’ve just read through the press release. It’s tentative (as all good science tends to be), but looks a lot more reliable than previous announcements.
Basically they’ve investigated, and can’t figure out any mechanism that could create this result, without life being involved.
On earth, we would call this obvious signs of microbe activity.
Uncompressed 1080 is already approaching the eyes resolution limit, when viewing it in a living room environment. 4K is close to the monitor usage limit.
The reason that 4K seems better is often down to bandwidth and colour depth.
There’s zero benefit to an 8K TV. An 8K monitor might be useful, but is still well into the diminishing returns curve.
There’s still some ground to be made up with colours and frame rates, but resolution is effectively maxed out already.

memes@lemmy.world•Back in my day, we didn't stop the game unless a bone was brokenEnglish
71·5 months agoIt depends on the hose and the flow rate. They can vary a lot.
Also, your not just clearing the stagnant water, but also anything that was growing in it.

This might sound pedantic, but actually makes a big difference, mentally.
Introvert refers more to how you mentally recharge, rather than interactions. An introvert requires time alone to recharge, an extrovert needs time around people. Your more likely socially anxious, and possibly mentally underdeveloped for socialising.
By locking down where the problem actually is, it helps you figure out how to counter it. Social anxiety is quite common, with viable treatment methods. Social skills are learnt. You get them by practice. It’s a problem that is common for autistics, so the info from those corners of the internet could be helpful, even if you aren’t autistic.
