Conversations being paid on the google play store is what’s stopping me from going xmpp… I can’t just say “message me via xmpp, you can use the Conversations app”. Now I’d have to explain what F-Droid is and why would they even get another app store and enable “unknown apps”. it’s not doable. I remember telling my mom to install Signal (before I got into self hosting) because I deleted whatsapp and she got angry like she worked for the zuck, saying “what do you mean you don’t use whatsapp” with an astonished face, started lecturing me on why I was destroying my social life… That just made me realize right now they probably wouldn’t download conversations either…welp I just wanted to share

So Matrix protocol is bad because criminals use it to distribute illegal content. That’s the same as saying Tor is bad because people use it to do illegal things on the dark web. Matrix is just a protocol which powers a decentralized network. Is it better to have proprietary centralised platforms where a small number of people control everything?

I think this would give me a reason to tell my contacts why I refuse from now on to use whatsapp for instance. I could say something like whatsapp now scans every single photo you send, therefore I won’t use it so contact me on some other place.

For Spotify, there is spotdl which downloads the music from YouTube Music, and then embeds the metadata from Spotify.

I just download to actually have the songs. No DRM, No Ads, No song getting removed from streaming service… I have 500+ songs downloaded in opus format and it only takes 2.5Gb with many of them being longer than 5 minutes. I don’t know why people keep using these services while they keep saying they hate it because there are so many ads or why they keep paying for DRM (aka. not owning anything)…
