  • I think it’s a mixture. I’ve quit watching news coverage on TV completely at this point, but I do still watch some more mainstream comedy shows (e.g. SNL, Colbert, After Midnight, etc). SNL’s latest episode illustrated this disconnect, especially with the opening sketch (a Nancy Grace impersonation basically saying “what’s wrong with people for liking the killer?”) and Chris Rock’s opening monologue. Rock started by talking seemingly sincerely about the CEO and how it must be terrible for his family, etc. and then said “Sometimes drug dealers get shot” or something similar.

There’s also a comedy narrative that is being established that I think is kind of mainstream media types coping with the reaction to the killing, which is that they’re saying “he’s only supported because he’s handsome”…but I really think they are out of the loop and many are truly surprised and/or still don’t understand the public’s reaction.

  • It’s not gonna be like the pussy hat protest times in 2017 when Trump was considered an aberration. He has less guardrails this go around and a supreme court that gave him immunity for basically anything he wants to do as long as he isn’t impeached and removed by Congress (though I don’t see how Congress can impeach him and remove him when he could likely kill congressmen as an official act).

Your attitude of “it wasn’t so bad” was shared by the American electorate who didn’t pay attention to the daily occurrences in his first term and assumed people were being hyperbolic. But the reality is that he’s older, dumber, and more unhinged than he was in his first term, and he promised terrible things his whole campaign and will have nothing stopping him from trying them.

  • It provides an extremely theoretical motive for people to do the abuse, that is unlikely to materialize in reality.

Yeah, this whole argument seems like a theoretical spurious hypothetical.

The dude in the video is acting like this is completely legal too, when all of the abuse is already illegal and the authorities just cannot prevent it because of the scale and size of the Internet combined with their own ineptitude.

If I’m in the business generally of blowing up and attacking company servers, why would I suddenly want to pivot to hosting monetized game servers? That’s an entirely different business. The whole thing strikes me as “OH NOES SOMEBODY MIGHT MAKE SOME MONEY OFF OF MY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTIES!!!”.

Centralized, proprietary servers for games other than subscription MMO games are complete and utter bullshit. Either make the game a subscription and keep all of it server-side, or allow people to host the servers and stop acting like assholes.
