This is a great suggestion. It’s a very useful thing to have. People are always asking me for help with things, I’m the only one with tools I guess and I only have a small box, mostly cheap stuff from harbor freight. But it works!
I’ve relaxed with it quite a bit recently. But I still like having them on me at all times. There’s times I like wearing it. Especially certain places like the doctors.
I leaned no one on Lemmy are as helpful as they seem. Nor as nice… I gave up on trying to run my own instance… My life is too busy and hard to find time for this anyway…
As frustrating as that would be, it wouldn’t be permanent I know they’re very serious with backups. A roll back is annoying but not really that damaging.
Thanks! Now I get it.
Not quite. From what I’ve read, I think only text is downloaded, pictures and other media are just links. So not everything needs to be downloaded. Also to trigger/maintain this connection (federation) at least one person from your instance needs to be subscribed.
But you won’t find this community in the search bar because you’re not federated yet. So to trigger the initial federation you’ll need to search for the full URL, the entire URL including “https://” (https://lemdro.id/c/android) It won’t show up at first, so try again in a few seconds, and sometimes you’ll need to try a lot of times if the instances are running slowly. But eventually your instance will find the other community on the other instance.
But at the time I’m writing this lemdro.id is apparently offline so it won’t work at all right now.
I ended up just starting over…
I’m sorry, that went over my head… i’m as new at this as you can be…
i don’t see the database mentioned in that file
LEMMY_HOSTNAME=“atosoul.zapto.org”

i’m so sorry but i still don’t understand…
root@laptop:/home/rain# docker exec -ti lemmy_postgresql_1 bash
Error response from daemon: No such container: lemmy_postgresql_1
here is the guide i followed that got me to this point… and then i checked that box with out understanding what i was doing…
Thank you for your response, but can you explain like I’m five? Lol
I don’t know what you mean by connect to my database, I’m really new to this stuff, this is all really above my head.
Some people think it’ll work just extremely slowly! Lol we’ll see I guess.
Some people are extremely skeptical, while others encourage it strongly. I’m an update this post later with how well it works. I’m not too worried about it, because I’m literally expecting to be the only user. It’ll probably run just fine for my purposes, but I’m not expecting to use it as my primary account or anything. Really it’s just an experiment.
I’m attempting with Lemmy Easy Deploy now. I tried a couple other methods already and failed. If I fail this time then I’ll have to try yet a fourth or possibly fifth way. But I think I’m out of options at that point lol. I’ll update this post if I get it started.
build the latest version yourself using Lemmy’s provided Docker files.
I’m attempting to compile 0.17.4 on a Raspberry pi 3 right now. So far it’s been basically frozen since 10am eastern. I’m not sure this option will work. But with that in mind I might try again with 0.17.3 if that means I don’t have to compile it.
Cool. I was just looking it up. Very neat. I don’t have the first clue how to go about it but I’ll let the little raspberry try overnight. We’ll see what happens.
I have no idea what cross compiling is but I’m open to trying it.
The only streak that’s EVER benefitted me was the one for my diary app (highly recommend Daylio) though I think if you didn’t buy it before it’s on a subscription model now… Like everything else. Don’t pay a subscription for your diary!
