science@lemmy.world•Urban birds' beak shape rapidly changed during COVID-19 lockdowns, suggesting human-driven transformationsEnglish
46·26 days agoThey observed that birds that hatched during the pandemic, when the campuses became empty and there was less food waste to feed on, had beaks with higher bill length and slimmer structure, similar to the wildland birds. However, after the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and people started trickling back to campus and food waste became ample. Birds born during this period reflected this shift, exhibiting shorter, thicker beaks typical of urban juncos.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what everyday technology do you think future generations will find completely baffling?
146·2 months agoAnalog clocks. Digital is so much easier.
Fillings and crowns. The dentist will regrow teeth.
Flashlights. You mean you carry a lighting device that does nothing else, when your phone can do that plus a million other things?
Keys. We’ll likely carry a fob for most things. They’ll be programmable to allow us to adapt to our locks, like a universal TV remote.
Fax machines in government. Someone in government will finally realize scan to email is so much cleaner.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Someone with your last name commits a heinous crime and their name becomes infamous, would you change that name? Why or Why not?
27·2 months agoI guess it depends how common your last name is where you live. If you’re a Smith/Johnson/Brown/Williams in the USA, those are pretty common. If you’ve got one of those names in China, maybe a name change is in order.
If your last name is Summerbell, that’s a bit rare, and maybe you need to distance yourself.
