Technology@lemmy.world•Firefox’s AI Kill Switch is a Trap: How Mozilla Made AI Your ProblemEnglish
21·4 days agoLook at my post history, I am as violently anti abominable Intelligence as it gets, but as much as I would have liked for Mozilla to either stay completely away from that curse or maybe make it available as an plugin… I am fine with the way they handled it.
If you absolutely don’t want anything of that crap in your browser feel free to use and recommend a fork, or Vivaldi, or NetSurf or Dillo.

18·5 days agoYeah, but giving a glorified markov chain generator the ability to hallucinate that you wanted to ‘sudo rm -rf /’ while utterly violating your privacy and perhaps uploading nasty photos of you without consent wasn’t possible yet. I mean… sure, it would have been entirely possible to script something like that together with about 1/1000 of the energy cost, but nobody was stupid enough to think it would be a good idea.

1·5 days agoTo actually set someone on fire you need some agent that will stick to them like gasoline.
Hmmm… you are right… but if you mount a propane lighter on, lets say, a water pistol filled with ethanol… hmmm…

2·5 days agoYes, scaring can make people just more angry and lead to a more severe attack… but I am pretty sure that a scared angry attacker who’s clothing is on fire will reassess his priorities rather quickly.

1·10 days agoI personaly am not forced to use Windows, quiet on the contrary - at the moment i am daily driving Haiku. But there is always this odd person in the extended family that cannot switch because of an pigeon breeding management software or some obscure program used for some niche interest… so its nice to have a roadmap to let them keep using an system that keeps getting updated.

Technology@lemmy.world•Firefox is ending support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, and users are urged to switch to LinuxEnglish
42·10 days agoWell, as an addition to all the calls for switching to Linux:
Its completely doable to install Windows 11 on unsupported Hardware, using an official ISO from Microsoft and letting the Rufus imager apply a few changes and Win 11 should run on hardware that is about 10 years old or a bit older (i think i have heard Microsoft has removed support for the Core2 generation of CPUs). If you want to get a really clean install the best tool is - i think - tiny11builder which cleans up an official ISO and makes the whole experience of running this OS on older hardware way more pleasant.
Currently i have a test system (a laptop) with an Celeron N3010 and 4 GB RAM on my desk at work running Windows 11 modified by tiny11builder and it is - while not exactly fast - absolutely useable for classical office tasks.

Technology@lemmy.world•Open-source game engine Godot is drowning in 'AI slop' code contributions: 'I don't know how long we can keep it up'English
2·11 days agoThe thing is: “AI” can be a useful tool in the hands of an competent programmer, media creator and so forth… BUT it is literally the dark side of the force. Just to bring in the Yoda quote:
Luke: … Is the dark side stronger?
Yoda: No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.
The problem it allows a horde of fools to create software that is - at best - dysfunctional and at worst really dangerous. While, yes, it always was possible to fake photographs and create false video evidence of events it either required to have money, knowledge or both. Now any person can - with nearly no training - create realistic looking pictures and videos leading to god knows what.
And don’t let me get into the environmental aspects of this technology…
Perhaps, some day in the future when the hype is gone (and hopefully most of the shitty people pushing it) it might be possible to use this technology in the right way… but this hype and push for the usage of that technology will not go away until we push at least as hard against it as the proponents push towards it.

Fucking terminals. These are NOT PCs, this are TERMINALS! 1!!
