Lemmy
Florida. It’s this plant, nopales are the leaves, tuna is the fruit. Also the whole plant and the fruit are called prickly pear, but when I see it for sale, it’s Tuna. Nopales taste sort of like green peppers to me.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why does postal voting favour the American Democratic Party?
4·1 day agoRepublican voters skew older (retired) so if you make voting difficult for people, the ones with more free time are the ones more likely to vote.
The easier it is for everyone to vote, the less the Republicans are favored.
Mail in ballots would also favor rural voters but I guess there are not enough of them for the conservatives to worry about?
But in short - no, the mix of voters does not stay the same as it increases.
Well, where I live, Tuna is also a cactus. Prickly pear is often called tuna. So yeah, tuna (fish) and tuna (fruit) can need disambiguation.
For me, it’s just such a rare treat to have time to myself, so I like it. If you mean without a partner or family, I dunno either, I did enjoy being alone in that way too. I guess I think if you aren’t happy with yourself, you aren’t going to fix that by being with someone else.
If it’s literal loneliness, I would say make sure to build habits that involve others. Go to yoga class, don’t do it at home. Go get coffee every morning at the same local place. Walk your dog, sit on your front step. Get a job that isn’t done at home. Be in the world, don’t isolate yourself.
That’s not as profoundly bad as I was, nor my nearsighted child, and I had a work colleague with -12 who got her vision corrected with Lasik.
I had the Lasik in my 20s for a -6 prescription and got, not perfect, but good enough vision to only need thin, light glasses.
When I was profoundly nearsighted I got really good correction with contacts, hard contacts gave me supernaturally good vision, but glasses never did. Even now I can’t get perfect vision with glasses, it’s just good enough.
You are farsighted? Two older ladies at my work had to get cataract surgery and in the process, their vision was corrected. Do get a second opinion, but it is true that you may not be able to see perfectly through glasses, I never could. Well enough to work, to read, and to not get headaches from squinting all the time, though, I don’t feel disabled by my sight.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some uplifting/inspiring/empowering songs? (I mean like songs about personal struggles... or political struggles...) (pls link if possible)
1·3 days agoSeconding Michael Franti & Idles.
Michael Franti said he used to make political music to try to improve the world but decided music that made people happy made the world happier more directly.
Idles are like your asshole friend who refuse to let you beat up on yourself. They are so good.
Deep penetration, hee hee.
Red light therapy is reasonably well proven at this point, it’s not magic but can have an effect.
One year on my birthday, years ago, my mom gave me a gift in a jewelry box. I was inwardly groaning, but when I opened it, it was memory for my computer. Which was a thoughtful gift, and a funny way to package it.
Way ahead of her time I guess.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can you change your body temperature at will?
2·5 days agoShivering does nothing, rubbing my hands together just makes my arms tired. When it’s not cold just cool, I can exercise (like go run up and down the stairs) and build internal heat. But not when it’s really cold.
When I was pregnant I couldn’t get cold, it was nice, I think that must be how a lot of people feel - I had a heater inside me. I wasn’t really too hot in the summer even pregnant, could still be still and cool, but not too cold in the winter at all.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is ironing clothes significantly less common now?
2·5 days agoNo tengo una plancha.
I have never had an iron, just wear knits mostly, natural fabrics. If absolutely necessary, will steam them, but only a couple times a year.
My mom didn’t iron much but she did have the board and the iron. Some of my coworkers do iron their stuff.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why was Rock 'n' Roll seen as the grooviest shit in the 50s when it's just averagely groovy (ie. unremarkable) today?
4·5 days agoMy mom talked about staying up late to hear the black radio station because everything on the radio was so boring. She ran away from home to see Elvis!
You live in a different world, with streaming, you can listen to so much music. I can remember before that - we at least had community radio with volunteer DJs who played different stuff but top 40 radio literally played about 40 songs on repeat.
I suppose your grandkids will also consider whatever you think shocking music to be boring too

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can you change your body temperature at will?
3·6 days agoI can cool right down by being still, when it’s hot.
Can’t do the inverse though, when it’s cold I’m just cold.
I went to a zoo, it sucked and had only one exhibit.
It was a shitzu
And
Why didn’t the skeleton go to the party?
He had no body to go with!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•For those who tried to enter the dating pool, how did it go?
2·6 days agoThis was my experience as well, everyone had calmed down and just staying in shape put me in the better looking bucket. Duck to swan thing, I didn’t get to feel that when I was young so it was kinda nice.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which high school friend took a path you didn't expect?
2·8 days agoOh I had a friend who was a cheerleader, she stayed with her high school boyfriend, he had a bad health crisis, recovered but she then rethought her life and became an artist, sort of dropped out of participation in anything that didn’t really make her happy. Has done fine, too, not starving or anything, they are still together, or were last I saw her.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL there are four major blood types: A, B, AB, and O. Mosquitoes love to drink O blood, they think it's delicious.English
10·8 days agoI dunno, I can sit by my husband and not get bitten, they don’t like me much so unless there is no other choice they leave me alone. I think they like people who are warmer and emit more carbon. It doesn’t seem like blood type is a strong factor.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the minimum number of food items you can survive on exclusively and what are they?
1·8 days agoMe personally? I could probably make it years on beans, rice, and greens if I had to. Collard greens, rice and beans, oil and spices to season them, and onions.
So glad I don’t have to, but if I had to choose that would be it.

Yes. My kids would laugh at me when I worked from home because I would not stop typing when I looked up to answer something they were asking me. I suck on the phone keyboard but good with QUERTY big keyboard. My fingers can talk on those
