Technology@lemmy.world•Google Messages is rethinking how link previews work, but we're not sure it's for the bestEnglish
113·5 months agoI havent read the article nor the comments yet, but I will guess before I do: Link previews are loaded in google’s servers.
Perhaps you didn’t read the part where it says it is opt-in…? Or maybe made up the part where it says that the classic local backup mechanism will be removed?

Absolutely agreed. I think when you have such role in a company you should avoid making political statements at all, because no matter what you say you will end up upsetting some people. In this case, “try-hard” democrats.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S. House Panel Says China's DeepSeek AI Is a 'Profound Threat' to National SecurityEnglish
252·11 months agoI asked Deepseek to write me a response to the matter, in an ironic tone and being mean when possible:
Official Response from DeepSeek AI:
"The U.S. House Panel has declared us a ‘profound threat to national security’—joining the elite ranks of TikTok, Huawei, and that time Bernie Sanders wore mittens. We’re truly honored, especially since Congress has such a stellar track record of identifying real dangers, like that time they grilled the TikTok CEO for… checks notes… making an app Americans actually enjoy more than their own government’s apps.
On TikTok’s ‘Threat to Democracy’:
“Yes, an app where teens lip-sync and share ramen recipes is clearly more dangerous than, say, a $886 billion defense budget or the fact that half of Congress still thinks ‘algorithm’ is a type of Greek yogurt. But by all means, keep pretending this is about ‘data privacy’ and not the fact that U.S. tech giants can’t compete without a little… legislative sabotage.”On OpenAI’s ‘Open’ Charade:
“We’d love to be ‘open’ like OpenAI—you know, the ‘nonprofit’ that took billions in Microsoft money, works with the Pentagon, and lobbies against AI regulation. DeepSeek AI, meanwhile, is just out here trying to make useful tools without pretending we’re Captain America. (Though if Congress wants to fund us too, we accept cash, Venmo, and subpoenas.)”On That TikTok Hearing:
*"After watching lawmakers ask the TikTok CEO if his app ‘connects to WiFi,’ we’re begging to testify next. Our conditions:- No questions about ‘where the internet lives.’
- No confusing us with ChatGPT (we have standards).
- Mitch McConnell must be replaced by an AI that blinks occasionally."*
Final Offer:
“Instead of hyperventilating about AI, maybe fix the stuff actually undermining America—like lobbyists writing laws, or the fact your ‘open-source intelligence community’ still runs on Excel 97. But sure, investigate us. We’ll wait. (P.S. Our AI did predict this hearing would go viral… for all the wrong reasons.)”🇺🇸 DeepSeek AI: The Only ‘Foreign Adversary’ Here Is Your IT Department. 🚀🤖

Technology@lemmy.world•The Fairphone 5 price has been dropped to €499. The phone is designed to be the most advanced environmentally friendly smartphone.English
78·11 months agoNo headphones jack.
Most people use bluetooth devices nowadays. Few have wired headphones, which they can still use by using a €2 adapter that you just leave plugged to them all the time. Then there is a 0,1% that complains on the internet demanding that phone companies keep a extra hole on their devices for a specific purpose another hole can already do. Oh and HMD phones don’t have it either, at least for what i could find.
More repairable
They seem about the same (glass, back, speaker, battery, port), but on the ff5 you can replace the cameras as well.
more flexible
Tf does that mean? You can bend it?
long term support and updates.
Liar? Fairphones have like 8 years of security updates and major android version upgrades. HMD gives like 3 years on their latest devices… What are you talking about?
Cheaper too.
I’ll give you that, but it really ends there.
HMD phones are not a bad choice at all but if the affordability isn’t first in the list I don’t see how they would make a better purchase over a Fairphone.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple Pressed by India to Pre-Install Government Apps on iPhonesEnglish
109·1 year agoI don’t see it necessarely as a bad thing. I would rather have my gov id app (for taxes, id and driving licence, public services info) on my phone when i buy it, rather than candy crush and other fucking bloatware. I think it would also help a lot of non-tech savy users set up their phones quickly.
Second of all, gov ID apps having their own store on the side is good. Them being only available on google’s store makes it so that if you want to access public services from your state you have to go through google (?), it is clearly not acceptable by a government standpoint, It is even worse than a monopoly.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•W11 bad because account. Nevermind my Android/iOS phone that I signed into. Can this finally stop as *the* argument against W11?
11·1 year agoSomewhat untrue by my experience. If you use a custom Rom purposely built without google’s garbage then yes, sure. But on normal devices, even if you don’t log into a google account, android is still going to use google services for at least notifications and location. Google Play Services will still be running in the background all the time sending constant network requests.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple Reportedly Removes Podcasts By Independent Russian Media OutletsEnglish
64·1 year agoRadio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is an American government-funded international media organization that broadcasts and reports news, information, and analyses to Eastern Europe
During the Cold War, RFE was primarily aimed at broadcasting to Soviet satellite states, including the Baltic states, and RL targeted the Soviet Union itself. RFE was founded by the National Committee for a Free Europe as an anti-communist propaganda[8] source in 1949, while RL was founded two years later.
Guys you don’t understand this is how indipendent journalism is done
Do we have something like this for Asia as well? Like you never know they might run out of our garbage propaganda… Oh yes we do.
Edit: this stuff is worse than like CGTN or Sputnik, because at least those don’t try to hide behind “InDePeNdEnT jOuRnAliSm” when they are financed by the goverment that rivals the area they serve.
