Based on the name of the community and the responses I’ve seen here, this is exactly the right place for this opinion.
Who reads this anyway? Nobody, that’s…. Oh wait. Some people do. I guess I should put something worth reading in here then. Well here’s a test. How much text can you put in here? Who knows? We’ll find out together.
I could write just about anything here, and it wouldn’t really matter. I could go on an on about nothing in particular, and there would still be space left unused. If you’re like really verbose, you could write about any pointless topic without ever reaching a conclusion, and you wouldn’t even hit the character limit. Like, how long could this text be before you hit the wall? Surely, there’s a limit? You can’t just dump a chapter of lorem ipsum in here, now can you?
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Phasellus mollis urna sit amet augue mollis interdum. Praesent sed massa eu quam vestibulum elementum. In pharetra sodales
Wow, that’s a lot of text. Previously, you couldn’t have this much, but now they’ve changed the settings, which is pretty neat.

But the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved, so we’re channeling our resources into projects that better match browsing habits today.
Soo… nobody needed that tool any more? Did they ever though?
Username (top right corner), settings, scroll down… Keep on going… There! Sort type: top hour.
If you’re using a mobile client, it’s also somewhere in the settings. Probably buried deep.
Using a blacklist approach seems to be very popular, but here’s an alternative for those who want to try something different.
Subscribe to all the communities you consider worth your time. Change the setting of your default feed so that home=subscribed. When you’re just casually browsing, you’ll see posts from the communities you’ve explicitly approved, so you can be pretty sure that you won’t be seeing stuff you don’t want to be exposed to.
If you want to discover new and interesting places, there are actually a few communities specifically for that purpose. (!newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca) Just subscribe to those, and your home feed will introduce you to new things from time to time. If you want to see shitposts, politics, memes or a combination of all three, you can always visit the “all” feed.
Mosquitos are known for being pretty big on penetration. It’s their thing, and they’re always the active participant.
As an absent admin myself, I can assure you that the system can take a surprising amount of neglect and abuse. There were times when I feared the system was beyond repair, but I’ve been surprised time and again by how resilient it actually is. Nowadays, you can also use your least hated LLM to give you suggestions and help with interpreting logs.
The thing is, you can neglect your system for long periods of time, run system updates blindfolded, but eventually, the tasks pile up and catch up with you. My latest misadventure involved finding out the hard way that lots of packages that used to be in core, were moved to extra. You know, reading those announcements might be a good idea… Anyway, I was unable to update my system, because about half of the packages were no longer available in core. Eventually, I figured it out, enabled extra, fixed some of the stupid mistakes I made along the way, and the system was back to normal. Yay! After about two hours of messing around, I can finally get back to neglecting my admin duties again.
That’s a good point. I totally forgot that clean vocals also exist. When I think of metal, all that comes to my mind is RORRORRO GRRROGRRO!
So, does that mean you’re not into metal or opera? They both technically have lyrics, but a casual listener will have no idea what they say.
Do you hate it more than Reddit?
Speaking of Finland, doesn’t the northern part of the map look way too green? Rovaniemi has one hospital, and about 36% of the population of the region should be within 1 h driving distance. If you limit it to just 15 min, it might be closer to 10-20% instead.
If you include all the other health services, such as clinics, then the numbers could add up. There are still many small villages that have no health services of any kind.
Exactly. I get the feeling that China doesn’t really want to see any foreigners on their land either.
Speaking of immigration, China could mitigate that problem by letting lots of foreigners in. Doesn’t look like it’s going to happen though.
Didn’t even realize until you pointed it out. I did feel a bit happy while reading, so that checks out.
Then, I thought about the way America is sinking, and the power vacuum being left behind. Gotta say, I wasn’t quite so uplifted any more now that I remembered that China will be taking that role on the world stage. Maybe 100 years from now people will be watching Chinese movies and using Chinese loan words.
Maybe it would have clarified if I had added some negative expressions such as “misguided MAGA notion” or “authoritarian dictator”.
“And we spend a lot of time choosing the right articles to publish and trying to get the message right. We think we’re an antidote for misinformation.”
Indeed, but maybe these journals define misinformation in the conventional way, not the MAGA way. That could be the problem here. If you publish anything too “woke”, it could attract threats like these.
I would love to believe in wholesome ducks, but I’ve read some truly awful things about them, specifically mallards. My imagination has been permanently contaminated by birds committing heinous atrocities to each other.
It definitely would be a good idea to put some SIBs in every place that produces intermittent energy.
Also, energy intensive places might want to get batteries too. Let’s say you have an aluminiun factory, which obviously needs lots of energy 24/7. How about you use cheap (or even free) solar power when there’s oversupply to charge the batteries, and discharge them during the night.
My thoughts exactly. My bare bones installation didn’t come with one. I had to specifically install it myself.
And why is it that people don’t want to see any ads at all? Some people argue that ads can help you discover products and services you might want to buy? Well, I tried that.
Got a separate computer just for this experiment. Installed Chrome, used online services that have ads etc. I exposed myself to tracking and ads for a while, and the ads I saw on that computer are still completely irrelevant. I’ve even told some sites exactly what I like, and the ad targeting still sucks.
Nobody benefits from this, except for the ad companies. Advertisers loose their money, and they get no sales in return (at least not from mme). Ad companies and related platforms get the money for showing me stuff I will never buy, while the ads infuriate me at every turn.
Even in the best case scenario where the ad companies have all of my data, they still can’t figure out what I might want to buy. The whole idea of ads is just completely broken. On my other computers where I actually do more serious stuff, I use every tool in my arsenal to block all of this digital cancer.
Makes things shorter.
In the applications mentioned by other people, you run into calculations that would look really messy and confusing. Things like 5•4•3•2•1 can be shorted to just 5! Imagine writing the full version of 123!
