Same it true the other way. Federation only only works with text and images are pulled from the original instances and there seems to be an issue with that.

I don’t think their are removing phone requirement, they will just add username support on top of it, so you can invite people using username, but still need phone to register an account.

Already do and most are receptive to it once you show them that every single one of them were caught up in a breach at some point.
