I wish there were more people here, too. But I don’t think it can ever realistically be, nor does it need to be a competition. As long as there are a default millions of people willing to spend their valuable attention contributing to corporate ad-powered social media companies, the more socially responsible platforms like Lemmy and Mastodon will always be a niche corner of an aspirational web that at least attempts to trust and respect its users. I’d flip it around: the smallness of these mostly positive communities on Lemmy reflects how content the huge crowds at reddit, meta, twitter etc are at being surrounded by utter shit. If the last few years haven’t shown them that there are better places to spend their time online, I’m not sure what will. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m also starting to be okay with the size and scope of things over here.

I appreciate the clarification! I definitely misinterpreted the reporting about this, and clearly didn’t dig deeply enough. This makes me feel a bit better about using the non-ChatGPT features.

Yup. Photo cleanup was cool to try once, but I’ll never use it again. Removing stuff from photos with a single tap also bugs me a bit in general, I’m not sure it’s something we should make so easy. Message summaries are absolute shit and have already caused confusion for me. I’m not even talking about the proper notification summaries, just the auto-summaries in the preview lines of the whole iMessage list. A number of them have really fucked with me. For example, a friend asked me to FaceTime her in a few days, and the summary just said “FaceTime request.” And I was like “shit, did I miss a call?” As far as I can tell I can’t turn that off without disabling the entire AI setting.

I’m also not sure how to feel about all of Apple’s privacy talk when it comes to their AI features. They say certain features will stay on device, which is great, but for everything else, as far as I’ve noticed there is no mention of what goes to OpenAI’s servers, since their AI is still primarily powered by OpenAI. There’s actually no mention of OpenAI in any of the disclaimers or warnings I read when I first enabled it.

Nobody seems to have an answer yet, you’re not out of the loop on this. This is the latest I’ve found, in terms of official statements. But frankly it seems like a pretty inadequate answer. The complete interview is full of language that makes it pretty clear they just really don’t know yet.

Exactly. I disappear quite often, just like my colleagues with kids do. We all trust each other to get our work done, so nobody cares what we actually do all day. More widespread work from home has helped normalize this a bit (it’s an amazing privilege that I enjoy, that not everyone can, to be fair), but just don’t be late for meetings, meet your deadlines, and otherwise enjoy your life however you choose, kids or not.

First part: 100% agree. The problem is that the empathy and compassion isn’t directed at everybody, not that parents get something extra. Everyone should get that extra empathy, and as long as you get your work done, who cares what responsibilities you have at home?

Second part: Hard disagree. There’s simply no way you can know what’s really going on in your coworkers’ lives. People also experience stress very differently, it’s quite relative. I think it’s universal statements like this that are part of the issue. Everybody deserves empathy, compassion, and the flexibility to live a full life while having a job. Parents don’t deserve that more than non-parents.

People carry debt from their Christmas gifts for the rest of the year, you’re right that it’s totally not harmless. I’m shocked how much some people spend on holiday gifts.

My family, granted we’re Jewish, basically stopped all gift-giving, except for when there’s a new kid in the extended family, which is rare. I wholly agree that Christmas is the best example of conspicuous consumption/consumerism and extreme capitalism. Frankly, Christmas season makes me kind of uncomfortable because of all the social expectations to give gifts. Fortunately I can usually say ‘“nah I’m Jewish, I don’t do Christmas,” but you’d be surprised how many folks are totally confused by that. So yup, spoil your kids if you want to, but don’t expect me to send you a holiday gift if you’re a functional adult.

I don’t think I do it correctly tbh, but since I have to drive to the laundromat to do my laundry, and pay out the ass for it ($12 per fucking load!!), all I want is to get in and out of there as fast as humanly possible. So I have two piles, one for all my clothes regardless of color or material, and the other for sheets and towels, regardless of color. I haven’t noticed any colors bleeding or extra degradation, and my clothes generally look pretty undamaged and crisp. I also typically use the hottest cycle for everything, which again, probably isn’t great, but it seems to work for me.

I really wanted to like it, but just couldn’t get into it. It was completely forgettable for me, and I like nearly every game that has a sci-fi setting. My bar is very low for that genre, but this one was not engaging at all for me.
