Because THOSE schools are expensive.
- IN STATE VS OUT OF STATE -
I went to a SUNY (State university) about 18 yrs ago and it was $3,000/semester. Today it’s $3,500/semester, so it didn’t go up by much. I stayed in state so it was lower for me. If you are not from the state it was $10,000/ semester (still on the lower end). Compare that to other people in other schools taking the same major as me. It was about 20,000/ semester for in state. We all ended up at the same jobs, I just didn’t carry the debt.
For the US, staying in state helps a lot. Unfortunately I think the grand idea of moving away and dorming is pushed onto kids by the media. Another comparison, my wife, who also went to school in the same state as me, went to at a CUNY (City University) and it was $1,800/semester. It was a pretty great school and campus, but not a school you’d see in the movies or tv shows. We both chose to stay within our means and not put a burden on ourselves or our families. Today we are very successful with no debt.
- SCHOOLS AS BRAND -
One more thing that drives price, is that schools are also brands now, and you are paying for that. There is peer pressure to get into schools with better awareness. Same reason a kid would rather wear apparel from nike vs walmart. My niece just started college this year and was brainwashed into picking a school she couldn’t afford. They took out a loan and the school end up being horrible for her. She dropped out during the last semester and I was told all the money spent this year was a wash. She’s now going to end up going to the school her family originally recommended to her. There are plenty of schools in the states that are good and wont cost an arm and a leg.
- CLASS FLUFF -
For the sake of keeping kids in school they pack in so many additional unneeded electives. I think I had to take 11 within my first 2yrs and each of my classes was 3hrs long. Some days I would have 9hrs of class. That is not including the down time in between those clases, so I could be there around 11-12hrs on a single day. If you want to keep a part time job to help pay for college, then that may mean you have to take additional winter and summer classes. In a lot of places this isn’t covered during the regular months so you have to pay for more. This fluff is one of the ways they keep bachelors and masters programs to run for as long as they do and at the prices they do. Some of these schools do run expedited programs where if you have previous electives that transfer over, you can do your degree in half of the time.
Yeah, I feel like there is a lot at play even in terms of how the content is paid for. Maybe netflix only gets the ad money and not the creatives, in which case they don’t want their content on the ad version. Either way, the customer suffers.
I don’t remember the vitriol being as consistent on reddit. On a larger scale here, if it’s a computer, it needs to be Linux or you’re downvoted. If it’s video games, it needs to be a PC or they don’t want to hear about it. Even Steam that was generally loved on Reddit gets some flack, because GOG is more DRM free from what I can tell (I don’t game on PCs)
Lemmy is the wrong place to mention Nintendo. You will get obliterated by people.
5’5 / 165cm. Finding brands that fit me took a few decades.
I came to terms with my height a long time ago, but other people didn’t. I am glad I am married and not on dating apps anymore, because it was filled with profiles with the exclamation “Needs to be 6ft tall”
Askjeeves.com and then later google.
When I was 7. It was late one night and I was walking around (when I should have been asleep). I noticed my mother finishing wrapping a present and she asked me to place it under the Christmas tree. I think it just slipped her mind in the moment and she didn’t realize what she had done. I didn’t say anything, but I knew from then the presents from Santa were from my parents. I wasn’t sad, but instead felt like I was just let in on a big secret.
It’s a bit ridiculous. I think many majors could probably be done in 25-50% less time. You doing it in 1yr vs 3yr is a good example of it.
A thing that upset me when I went to college (15ys ago) was all the fluff electives I had to take. More than half of my classes were not associated with my major. I was looking into getting a masters a few years ago and one of the requirements was American History, again! I learned all of American history in elementary school, and all of it again in middle school, and all of it again in high school and again for my bachelors and I need to do it again for a Masters? Add along more sciences and math classes for an art related major. While I understand in building well rounded students, a lot of it seemed like it was meant to just beef up the number of classes I needed to pay for.
The number of electives needed was also enough where you only had two options.
I stopped wearing a smart watch about two years ago when all the notifications were bothering me. I had gotten it for free so it didn’t bother me that it was sitting there. I was always obsessed with watched as a kid, but as an adult I never stumbled upon any watches I deemed worthy and unique enough for my wrist. One day I stumbled upon a vintage watch on instagram. 2yrs later I now own about 20 vintage watches (quartz, mechanical and digital).None of the super crazy ones that cost thousands, though those look pretty amazing sometimes.
Most of these hot take threads do not in fact have many hot takes.
When the MCU started I don’t think people considered Iron Man, Captain America, Thor as A list. They were just the properties they weren’t able to sell off yet. Doing these movies was a big gamble. They needed to succeed so they put their best effort into them and it paid off.
What’s more surprising is that Bradley Cooper took the time to Cameo, at a time when big celebrities weren’t doing that kind of stuff. I believe he was a producer on the show, so that did help.
I’ll go withe some more niche ones
Completely forgot about Journeyman
Mine was going to be a step further. Too many Jedi and Sith. If you want to keep the force, sure, but do something new. The Witches of Dathomir are the only real new thing with the force since the first movie. You can count Bendu and the Mortis Gods, but they were very minimal. It seems like only Filoni wants to expand the universe.
Hell, I think Season 1 of Star Wars Visions had every episode about the Jedi/Sith, it wasn’t until season 2 that they started breaking out of it.
Yes, most of these are standard takes.
Ocarina of time. All Zelda games since are to some degree compared to it in terms of how successful it is monetarily, gameplay and story-wise. So many modern adventure games are based on this one game. It’s the game that finally made target tracking in 3D work. It’s so well thought out, that a blind streamer is able to play the game probably better than I ever will. If most common people know of “zelda” it’s because of this game. There are so many memes from Zelda in general. It’s one of the few games from my childhood that I will replay for the rest of my life.
The reason I posted this was because I have been on .world and didn’t realize it’s run by people in Europe (wasn’t a thing I assumed I would need to know). Different countries will enforce different rules on their instances. The whole removing comments about jury nullification threw me off. I want to start building up some communities, but I’d rather at least my account be centered around an instance I can trust.
