This post is half a test for me to see how Lemmy is currently handling video and gif, but this also gives a nice visualization of a few of the major points of my big feather article I’ll post tonight or tomorrow.

I typically post using Liftoff, which seems to have no native video support and just links to an outside site. I also have Boost, which I think currently stinks for how I post, which stinks because I loved old Boost. I may try the straight World website to see what that does.

My questions to you guys:

Do you want video content? I feel some people do not like video for one reason or another. I usually fall into that camp because it’s much quicker to read something saved I don’t need to adjust my volume or worry about annoying people nearby.

Have you found a good way to post or view video or animation on Lemmy? In my past tests, I can post it fine from Boost, but not always see it or get thanks y, etc in Liftoff, and I’m worried I’ll post things that work well for a few of you, but annoy a good portion of the rest of you.

Let me know your thoughts!

In Jerboa it also opens in an outside link, which is one reason I’m not partial to videos. But seeing those feathers not move and (not) hearing the sound of the owls flight would be hard to replicate in text. Great video!

I agree. Integrated video would definitely be a more polished experience. Once apps start popping up on their own it starts to be a hassle. And especially since it seems we’re not all getting the same experience.

I thought this video went very well with the feather post though and would really make a lot of the facts come to life. I saw this video 4 or 5 years ago and I think of it all the time because of how dramatic the difference is. You hear “owls fly silent” and think “well I never think of birds making that much noise anyway” and that it wouldn’t be thaaaat different, but this shows that yeah it really is that different and the side by side and slow motion compared to the other birds makes it night and day clear.

You guys may have seen the peregrine/stealth bomber comparison pic before. I love peregrines very much as well, but they’re more like a shark with a high speed vertical sneak attack, owls with the camo and silence are the real stealth bombers.

I may have to give Connect another try. It sounds like it’s got the most features working smoothly.

Liftoff and Boost give me a thumbnailed YouTube link, which I feel is acceptable for now.
