My newest Blender project I completed a few days ago. Made entirely in Blender with a smidge of touching up in Photoshop! It didn’t end up how I envisioned it in my head but I’m still pleased with the result regardless.

More of my work here.

    Great job!

I like the volumetric lighting (at least, I think that’s what it is?) I feel like it was always tricky to get right - at least, when I was working in Maya back in the day.

I do feel like the blue light is a little bit aggressive, and wonder if there’d be value in adding some more saturated colored lights to give some depth? Depends on the concept art, obviously. I’m curious - do you mind posting the reference you’re working off?

Thank you so much! There was no concept art at all. This, along with many things I make, are just made on the fly from ideas I have in my head. I rarely ever work from concept art.

The blue is pretty strong and I did play around with decreasing it. The scene originally had a lot more green and I felt the blue fit better. Ah well, lessons for next time!

Oh wow! Impressive that you did this on the fly!

I feel you on wanting to make things straight from your head, it feels closer to art as a mode of creative self expression.

I have found though, that visual planning and collecting references (even if it’s just like, the color of light from one painting, the texture of an ancient piece of pottery, etc. ) actually gives you more opportunities to be creative and helps build a visual library in your mind that you can draw from in the future. It is a lot of work, though, and feels like it slows you down at first.

Maybe you can try it and see if you like it?

I’ve recently started to use references and keeping notes of things I want to do, so that’s been a relatively new addition to my workflow. It has certainly helped a lot.
