im looking into replacing my current x230 and framework laptop with an old thinkpad.
my requirements are: great linux support, compact (as much it can), alum or metallic body.
good to have: boxy look, model after 2018, coreboot/libreboot (i doubt new models are supported but one can dream)
does this thing exists?
The t480 was the last thinkpad with a useable CPU and a rich feature set (dual battery, removable battery, replaceable ram, ability to use a 2nd SSD via the wan slot). Linux support is great and libreboot support was just released for it.
I also have a newer amd x13 thinkpad. Sure the overall performance is better but the keyboard is not as good, s3 sleep battery drain sucks, and it takes forever to boot up
Thx for the news the t480 has libreboot support! I’d missed it. I love my t480 for all the reasons listed. It made computing a joy again
whaa the t480 has coreboot support now? amazing
My t480’s keyboard keeps falling out but that’s probably not supposed to happen.
Honestly I’m saving up for a framework. Thinkpads have tanked in quality and it’s a damn shame. I still love my T530 but it’s just getting to slow to browse the web
There are a bunch on computers.woot.com and I’ve been looking at some, e.g. x370 or x13 yoga. I know a guy who returned a framework. Idr the exact issues but it sounded unfinished at the time. I’ve been wondering about recent ideapads. Awesome specs and they supposedly run Linux ok, but to now I’ve stayed with thinkpads.
What’s wrong with your current machines?
Maybe look at some Dells?
the x230 is great but the plastics are crumbling so I thought it is a good chance to get something with a better screen.
the framework feels cheap, even though it costs a lot, Im pretty sure it wont last for as long I bought it to last without the need for replacement parts.
