Summary

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Louisiana, alleging the state’s prison system routinely detains inmates weeks or months past their release dates, violating constitutional rights and costing taxpayers millions.

A multiyear DOJ investigation found systemic “overdetention” affecting over a quarter of inmates since 2012. Federal officials warned Louisiana last year, but “marginal efforts” were deemed insufficient.

State officials blamed prior reforms and criticized the timing as politically motivated.

The lawsuit highlights broader issues in Louisiana’s prison system, including its history of harsh conditions and rights violations.

Sounds like the prisons get federal money for everyone in the facility, creating incentive to keep as many people there as possible for as long as possible.

Yes. It’s naked corruption. I would just think there should be a person outside the prisons profit motive that overseas their operations. You know. Legally.
