I seem to remember Sakurai saying that this would be the last one. I guess he either doesn’t have much of a say or that it made too much money to pass up on another….

Sakurai isn’t even old, he seems like the kind of guy who could go on making games for another 45 years haha

The thing is it seemed like Sakurai wants to do other things, but has no choice but to work on smash 28/9.

Yeah :( Then I wish he could retire from it. I’m fine with Ultimate being the last one, Smash will live on through the community.

I can’t wait for people to make an emulated online mode like they did for Melee!

Maybe my memory is faulty but I seem to recall every single sequel was going to be the last one. Them Nintendo saw the profits and cuts him a bonus so he turns around and says one more.

Sakurai’s independent. Nintendo always goes to him first when it’s time to make a new entry, but Sakurai’s under no obligation to accept. Nevertheless, he keeps coming back to the table, so it’s probably fair to assume that he enjoys directing this series.

Sakurai remembered that if he wasn’t making Smash games, he’d have too much time to sleep; SIX whole hours! Of SLEEP!

Maybe this is a hot take, but I really wish we could just let things die. Smash Ultimate works quite well as the finale the series deserves. I could see maybe 20 or 30 years down the line they do a ressurection with some sort of spiritual successor. But I’m against seeing another smash anytime soon. There are a lot of franchises that I think should adopt this mindset, it’s not just smash.

Edit: I also think in the interim developers could work on long dead franchises like how Destiny is bringing back Marathon.

Idk that makes sense for like story driven games where things have a definite ending. For a fighting game I don’t really care if they keep pumping them out since it’s not like detracting from anything major. People just want to play as like slippy or geno or something. People will just keep playing the good ones, like how melee has survived.

Exactly, so I think it’s fair to let the franchise get some air before it comes back into the ring so to speak. Let those games shine and be cherished, pick up a different lost franchise in the meantime. But I can definitely see how others would disagree.

I think it’s quite fair to argue melee or brawl being the finale.

New gamers start every day. They want to play these games. Especially something like ssb. 20-30 years is too long to wait for another game.

So let them play the older games. The point is to let the franchise die so that something else can be born in it’s stead. Instead of rinse repeating the same game over and over again slightly tweaking the variables and considering that a significant change.

What are they going to call it? Ultimate is already final-sounding. Ultimate 2, Now With More Ultimatums?

Just because a sequel has fewer characters doesn’t make it an inferior game. By that logic, Mortal Kombat Armageddon was the best Mortal Kombat.

Make it available on a platform where ultimate isn’t, such as a new console. Pokemon’s already shown this works.

In 15 years the only way to play ultimate will be on Nintendo’s 4 year “New” premium plus subscription plan (streaming only).

One idea might be to leave Ultimate as the most comprehensive game in the series, but spin off a subseries with a different style or gimmick, in the same way that Tekken Tag Tournament didn’t necessarily compete against the mainline Tekken games. Smash already has so many modes and so much customizability that I don’t know what would make a good spinoff, though. You could change the game style instead, such as by focusing more on the kind of fast paced and technical gameplay that Melee players enjoyed, but I think they’ve decided that the current style of Ultimate has the most broad appeal, so any changes would probably mean intentionally making a more niche title, which I assume is not the goal.

I’m happy someone is as passionate for Golden Sun as I am. Always loved that franchise. Isaac would be cool, I was stoked when he at least showed up as an assist trophy. Seems to be the most attention that series is going to see for a long time unfortunately.

Yeah, they keep acknowledging that it’s a popular series, it got brought to Wii u and even is coming to the switch as one of the first GBA games, but they won’t do anything else with the series :(

I’d love to see them keep supporting the current game with new characters and updated online support.
